Scientific gaps and modelling

Topical limitations to the present scientific knowledge are addressed and discussed at WG2 meetings and eventually at expert workshops. Prospects are prioritised based on their technical feasibility and added value for research and operational communities. This knowledge will add information that is useful for the parameterization of models. An assessment of the present model uncertainties will result in improved outputs of models (with special reference to dynamic modelling of carbon and nitrogen budgets, and ozone flux).I nformation is collected by literature searches, expert workshops, other meetings, national contacts, WG1 results, and, eventually questionnaires, and is collated at WG2 meetings and by means of the Action website.

Summer School on Ecophysiological Field Techniques in Climate Change and Pollution Research

Working Group 2 “Scientific gaps and modelling” (WG2) of the COST Action FP0903 (MAFor) organized a 5-day Summer School on “Ecophysiological Field Techniques in Climate Change and Pollution Research”. The School was held on 5-9 September, 2011, at Fondazione Mach, Centro di Ecologia Alpina, Monte Bondone in Trentino, Northern Italy. The training program was set up by Gerhard Wieser and Rainer Matyssek in cooperation with the local host Loris Vescovo and his colleagues.

The aim of this training course was to provide young researchers with theoretical knowledge and methodological skills to become actively enrolled into the activities of MAFor, striving to augment understanding of state and potential of forest mitigation and adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment, and to reconcile process-oriented research, long-term monitoring and applied as well as mechanistic modelling.

On such grounds, focuses of the Summer School were on (1) assessing water potential, leaf-level gas exchange and sap flow in adult forest trees, and up-scaling of tree water relations to stand-level water balance; (2) highlighting drought effects on tree ecophysiology as employed through experimental manipulation; (3) assessing soil CO2 efflux; and (4) introducing into theoretical backgrounds about usage of eddy covariance techniques and modelling in Climate Change and Pollution Research.

The rationale of the training course and WG2 of MAFor is related also to the aims of IUFRO Unit 7.01.02 Impacts of air pollution and climate change on forests – Mechanisms of action and indicator development”, which is coordinated in personal union by R.M., G.W. and Alessandra Kozovits.
